Delirium Awareness

March 11th 2020 was the World Delirium Awareness Day!

We strive for a world with less vulnerable and elderly patients that will develop a Delirium during their hospital stay!

Delirium is associated with worse cognitive and functional recovery, higher inpatient morbidity and mortality, and longer hospital stay. Therefore, prompt diagnosis and timely treatment are essential!

Please watch the video below in which HealthCare Professionals talk about the importance of early detection, monitoring and interventions to avoid – as much as possible – the worse outcomes of delirium.

DeltaScan revolutionizes delirium care

To help healthcare professionals detect and monitor for delirium, DeltaScan is created. The development is initiated by clinicians, who feel the need to get a grip on delirium, to improve patient recovery.

We have the ambition to support the quality of care and patient safety. Improved delirium detection improves patient outcome and reduces hospital length of stay, while reducing healthcare costs.

This is beneficial for patients, their families, healthcare professionals and budget holders. Medical guidelines prescribe patients at risk of delirium to be monitored at least every shift.

Using DeltaScan 3 times per day in every patient at risk will improve compliance. It makes documentation and communication about results effective and practical.

Delirium is progressively portrayed as the next vital sign. Delirium provides a vital sign for the brain, and the mental state of the patient. With DeltaScan it is possible to monitor this next vital sign. DeltaScan’s score (1-5) can be used to effectively and practically communicate about the patient’s status.

Medical device based on EEG

EEG (electroencephalographam) is the depiction of the electrical activity in the brain. As delirium is acute failure of the brain, DeltaScan is a practical device for detection and monitoring for delirium in patients. DeltaScan can be used by healthcare professionals (nurses and doctors) at the patient’s bedside. The patient’s brain activity is rapidly measured and DeltaScan detects and quantifies those specific waveshape patterns in the EEG, that are characteristic for delirium (also called Polymophic Delta (PMD).

In practice

As a nurse, I wish to provide the best possible to care to the patients that are entrusted to my care. Detection of delirium is an important task, as delirium may lead to serious and lasting downstream complications and can be a distressing experience to patients and their loved ones, that slows down recovery. DeltaScan helps to make my task clear and easy. On my round, I give my patients their medication, provide woundcare, measure their vital signs such as the blood pressure and scan the patient’s brain activity for delirium. It is key to detect delirium as early as possible!

How to use DeltaScan

This video explains how to use DeltaScan. Using DeltaScan 3 times per day in every patient at risk will improve compliance. Delirium is progressively portrayed as the next vital sign. DeltaScan’s score (1-5) can be used to effectively and practically communicate about the patient’s status.
